Learn Chinese
I've decided to start learning Chinese. It's a surprisingly simple language. Four tones, easy-to-pronounce syllables... oh, and a writing system that would take the average person years to learn, even if he were an expert at the spoken side.
But even the writing is manageable. After taking a year of Japanese, kanji have little ability to scare me. I can understand their meaning and recognize the radicals in most cases. In the end, it just comes down to route memorization.
I'll be learning Japanese and Chinese simultaneously. My move to San Francisco is going to make this a lot easier. I've lined up a private instructor for Japanese and a formal class for Mandarin Chinese. Quite exciting.
In the meantime, I'm going through my Mandarin and Japanese texts, and also cruising through a site I found called ChinesePod. The name called out to me because I was a fan of JapanesePod101, though I'm certain they're not affiliated.
Let's hope I can keep my Asians straight...
